Nā Te Pō ka puta ki Te Ao Mārama – from Darkness to the World of Light and Knowledge, come one and all to Tūhura Otago Museum’s annual celebration of the International Day of Light! Our fabulous science team will be joined by scientists from Te Whai Ao – Dodd-Walls Centre to bring you activities to explore light! From the fields of science and technology to art and culture, you may have never realised how important lasers, lenses, and luminous chemicals are to your everyday life, so come and discover something wonderful with us! 10am – 4pm Atrium Level 1 Free
International Day of Light Science Demonstrations
Enjoy a day filled with interactive science demonstrations at Space Place. Light up the epic space museum with rainbows, lasers and whānau fun. Learn about the qualities of light with science demonstrations facilitated by our brilliant, Wellington-based Te Whai Ao – Dodd-Walls Centre volunteers. Regular admission charges apply, entry includes a planetarium show and a live star talk. 10am-5pm | regular admission charges apply
"Traveling with Light" across Aotearoa!
In a national first, Te Whai Ao – Dodd-Walls Centre has coordinated a simultaneous showing of Parque de las Ciencias' film "Travelling with Light" across the three digital planetaria in the country. This film explores the importance of light in all areas of our lives - from the creation of the universe to life on earth, from the evolution of humanity to the forefront of communication, medicine, and art! Each venue will also offer associated hands-on demonstrations into the science of light to accompany the showing.

This FREE event is offered in partnership with Tūhura Otago Museum.
IDL Science Fair
Come to Papakura Museum to celebrate the International Day of Light from 10 am on the 14th of May. There will be power generators, diffraction glasses, and other interactivities suitable for the whole family. Come see the museum in an entirely new light using our camera obscura, or just have a chat with one of our friendly scientist volunteers, we look forward to seeing you on the 14th.
IDL Science Fair
Scientists from the University of Auckland will be hosting a range of activities to celebrate the International Day of Light at MOTAT from 10 am on the 1st of May. There will be bottle rockets, power generators and other interactives suitable for the whole family. See MOTAT in a new light using our camera obscura, or, if you’re feeling very brave, come hold a piece of our star in your hands. Come to check out our activities or just to chat with some scientists in your own backyard about light and lasers, we look forward to seeing you at MOTAT.
Quantum Shorts
Alexandra Public Library and the Dodd-Walls Centre are bringing you the weird, wonderful, and stranger-than-fiction side of science with this screening of the finalists in the global Quantum Shorts Film Competition. These ’quantum-inspired stories’ are no more than five minutes in length and range from live-action to puppeteering, from dad-jokes to emotionally dramatic.

Otago Museum teams up with the University of Otago to bring a little more light into your lives to mark UNESCO's International Day of Light.
Join students from the Otago Optics Chapter for hands-on interactive and take-home activities, and demonstrations about the science of light!
For the comfort and safety of attendees, the activity stations will have appropriate distance between them, and take-home materials will be available for you to complete offsite if you prefer.
